The Ballast Water Convention requires all ships internationally to manage their ballast water. According to IMO D2 and US Coast Guard standards,ballast water discharge does not exceed:

>50µm: 10 living organisms/m3

10-50µm: 10 living organisms/ml

working principle:

BallastWISE performs analysis based on the image analysis method of biological individuals and the fluorescence detection (patent method of chlorophyll (chla) content in biological individuals. Given that most heterotrophs (organisms that do not contain ChLA) are motile,the combination of these two methods ensures that a large proportion of living organisms are detected. The BallastWISE test results agree well with the manual counting results.

BallastWISE is capable of analyzing living organisms at 10-50µm and >50µm in samples without the need for any intervention or addition of chemical reagents.

Most compliance testing systems use fluorescence detection methods to perform bulk ChLA measurements of algae in the 10-50µm particle size class. These methods detect only a small fraction of viable organisms in ballast water and are not accurate enough for compliance testing. Because organisms other than algae and organisms larger than 50µm are ignored.

The D2 standard limits the number of viable organisms based on particle size class. The size distribution of marine microorganisms shows that the number of 1-10 μm organisms not included in the D2 standard is also large,making particle size an important factor. Measurements using the BallastWISE system are in good agreement with microscopic particle size measurements.
