HIRTS-1 is a compact,self-contained recording device that Measure and record impacts and shocks to helmets or other space-confined devices. The device is implanted or mounted on the inner surface of the helmet. The device contains three accelerometer sensors that accurately measure the acceleration (force) of a helmet impact in 3 directions. The device can therefore measure and record impacts at any time and in any direction. During an impact event, the device measures and records the peak value of the impact event,or maximum acceleration (force),in three axes (x,y,z) as well as the exact date and time of occurrence. Furthermore, the device measures and records the velocity \u201cchange u201d (energy) proportional to the acceleration of the event in the three axes (x,y,z). Hurt devices can continue to take these measurements multiple times (thousands) and for up to several days in self-contained operation. After the recording session (controlled test, exercise or game) is completed, the device connects to the computer via wireless infrared to retrieve the recorded data. The data is displayed in a spreadsheet-like table listing all recorded events by number, date, time, peak g-force value, and delta-V energy value. These data can be used to assess the severity of an athlete's helmet impact and may be used to determine concussion severity for impacts with unusually high amplitude and energy. The device can also serve as a tool to identify effects that may be part of the severity of a concussion but may not be reported to the coaching staff by the athlete themselves.
