The 6D is a portable laboratory and industrial grade instrument that measures the hazards of UV radiation to the eyes and skin. It is sensitive to ultraviolet radiation and is designated as a hazardous material in standards published by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists. These standards state that total UV exposure over an 8-hour period should not exceed 3 millijoules per square centimeter at 270nm. Other wavelengths are potentially hazardous along with the 270nm wavelength according to the spectral weighting function (see chart in this menu). Safety instruments monitor the combined effect of all UV wavelengths from the light source.
