Problems:
Measuring pH in seawater with glass electrodes requires special sensor construction to avoid errors caused by the high ionic strength in seawater. Problems can also arise with the use of conventional ceramic diaphragm reference electrodes due to the high and variable node potential developed at pressure. Due to the existence of this problem,the pH electrodes developed until now are only suitable for water depths of 1,500 meters. In addition,it is sometimes inconvenient to use a dual-channel detector system to measure pH. One channel is a glass electrode and the other channel is a reference electrode.
The Solution – New Combination Electrodes for Submersible Detection Systems
The pH combination sensor consists of a reference electrode and a pH-sensitive glass electrode,which a housing,saving a free channel for the detection system. To enable precise measurements also in the deep sea,the double-diaphragm construction of the reference electrode is used to avoid signal stability issues during pressure changes. .The reference electrode/sample is separated by a pore separator. Inside the reference electrode is potassium chloride gel with a special separator built in. The potassium chloride solution contains an Ag/AgCl system. The pH combination sensor is used for in-situ determination of pH values and is also available in a deep-sea version (up to 600 bar) without an integrated temperature sensor.
