The sand equivalent test shows the relative proportions of undesirable clay-like fine particles and dust present in the granular soil and fine aggregate passing through the No. 4 screen. Sand equivalent shakers are also used in the Durability Index test,which measures the relative resistance of aggregates to creating such unwanted clay-like fines as they degrade. In either application,the sample to be tested is placed in a clear plastic cylinder con calcium chloride,formaldehyde,and glycerol. After shaking the cylinder with a sand equivalent shaker,allow it to stand for 20 minutes for a settling period.
