These devices consist of an L.E.D. light source and a photoelectric sensor that scans an axis-mounted slotted disk. An internal pulse-shaping amplifier circuit sends a rectangular pulse signal from the current sag output in response to the through-slit as it rotates. They can be coupled directly to the machine shaft via flexible bellows,springs or rubber sleeve couplings that allow axial and radial misalignment. They can also be connected to lightweight instrument belts. The belt drive also allows for convenient upshift or downshift ratio changes,which is useful for ob non-standard PPR rates.
