Murata is a world-leading Japanese manufacturer of electronic components. Its main product is ceramic capacitors, and it has an absolute market share in the world in ceramic filters, high-frequency parts and sensors. Among them, ceramic filters account for 65-70% of the market share, and vibration sensors account for 90% of the market share, making them the dominant players in this field. Murata's customers are located in PCs, mobile phones, automotive electronics and other fields.

Murata was founded by Akira Murata in October 1944. It was officially renamed Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. in December 1950 and is headquartered in Nagaokakyo City, Kyoto Prefecture.

On April 13, 2012, Murata announced the acquisition of RF Monolithics at a price of US$1.78 per share.

On August 28, 2014, Murata subsidiary Murata Electronics NorthAmerica acquired all issued shares of Peregrine Semiconductor Corporation for US$12.50 per share in cash, for a total transaction price of US$471 million.

On July 28, 2016, Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. signed a memorandum of understanding with Sony to discuss the acquisition of Sony Energy Devices' lithium-ion polymer batteries and lithium-ion batteries and its manufacturing operations in China and New Zealand, but does not include Sony brand USB mobile power supplies, alkaline batteries, button batteries and other battery businesses for the general retail market.

The company is also known for manufacturing combination components and RF filters based on different processing technologies such as thin film, thick film and low temperature co-fired ceramics (LTCC). This includes monolithic ceramic capacitors, multilayer ceramic devices, chip inductors, SAW filters, crystal filters, LC filters, ceramic resonators, etc. Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. has conducted research on new technologies related to RF components, resulting in it receiving many patents. Murata holds more than 300 patents and patent applications related to ceramic capacitors.
