history

Founded in 1941 as Perfection Mica Company, we initially focused on mining and processing mica at a mine in North Carolina, later acquiring ownership of the Buster Mine in the Dakotas, which was the largest mica mine in the world in the 1940s. Concurrently, the Magnetic Shielding Division was established to develop materials and processes to control magnetic fields for NASA space travel. Shortly after the Magnetic Shield division was formed, it assumed a dominant position in our business and the company was renamed Magnetic Shield Corporation. Perfection Mica Company's growth and industry awareness in the television and electronics industries facilitated an easy transition. Driving the strategy and continued growth were sensitive electronic applications developed during World War II. By the mid-1950s, demand for magnetic shielding was so great that it overtook the mica business, and the Magnetic Shield Company officially became its first business in 1956. Since that time, Magnetic Shield Company has been a major leader in the industry, registering our proprietary brand shielding alloys Co-NETIC® and NETIC® with the introduction of INTER-8® braided cable in 1955. These products set the benchmark for magnetic shielding alloys. Since the 1960s, other companies have tried to grow in the shielding market; many of them were founded by former employees of Magnetic Shield. However, to this day, Magnetic Shield Corporation enjoys a reputation based on decades of experience and product development. One well-known brand that stands out worldwide is MuMETAL®, which is legally a proprietary brand of Magnetic Shield Corporation.
