Edwin J. Montalvo Sr., who holds degrees in mechanical engineering and law, began his career in 1947 as a manufacturer's representative in New York City.

In 1970, at the age of 57, Montalvo switched careers and became a manufacturer. That year, Montalvo introduced his patented air-cooled dual-disc multi-speed brake and clutch, which revolutionized tension control. He built the prototype in his basement workshop.

His innovative design put an end to bulky and easy-to-maintain water-cooling systems and the piggyback configurations once used to cover the wide range of horsepower and torque combinations often required in tension control applications.

Today, Montalvo Corporation's product line includes load cells, analog and digital web force controllers, load cells, brakes, clutches, tension indicators, safety chucks and more.

Montalvo Montage In 1976, Montalvo founded Montalvo Company in Maine, USA. In December 1978, the plant nearly tripled in size, and another expansion was carried out in 1984.

Edwin J. Montalvo, Sr. died in 1985. By that time, the high product standards he had set had made his company an internationally renowned manufacturer of web tension control equipment. This tradition continued with Margaret Montalvo as CEO until her death in 2014 and now with their son Ed and daughter Midge as co-managing directors manager.

During May and June 2001, Montalvo moved from Portland to a new manufacturing facility in Gorham, Maine, USA.
