technology

TDK's technical characteristic is that it independently develops raw materials and creates unique electronic components with values that have not yet existed.

TDK possesses "five core technologies" for manufacturing cutting-edge electronic components.

. Material technology - the crystallization of more than 80 years of history and technology.

. Processing Technology - Implementing nanoscale control.

. Evaluation and simulation technology -- extreme accuracy for accurate analysis of nanotechnology.

. Product Design Technology - "Product Design Technology" that uses knowledge, experience and new ideas accumulated over the years to create product value.

. Production Technology -- Manufacturing equipment for product production in-house.

history

TDK was founded in Japan on December 7, 1935, producing ferrite cores that had just been invented by Dr. Kato Yogoro and Dr. Takei Takei. The name TDK is the abbreviation of "Tokyo Denki Kagaku", and the two founders belong to the Department of Electrical Chemistry of Tokyo Institute of Technology. It began producing ceramic capacitors in 1951, invented the magnetic audio tape in 1953, was listed on the Tokyo OTC Market in 1959, and was listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange main market in 1961. It began producing cassette tapes in 1966. In 1965, it set up an office in New York City to carry out U.S. business; the audio tapes produced by TDK were used by NASA in 1969 to record the conversation during the first human landing on the moon. In 1970, an office was established in Frankfurt, West Germany to carry out European business.

In addition to electronic components, TDK also has a wide range of magnetic and optical media production businesses, including video tapes in various formats, blank CD-Rs and recordable DVDs, which are familiar to end consumers. It has also produced computer speakers. Industry trends have the company moving to new forms of storage media. In 2004, TDK became the first media manufacturer to join the development of Blu-ray Disc.

TDK's storage media business was transferred to the American Imation Company in July 2007. In 2008, TDK acquired the German electronic equipment manufacturer EPCOS AG and exited the recording media business in 2014.

In 2016, it cooperated with Qualcomm and established a joint venture to acquire sensor manufacturer Micronas Semiconductor Holding AG. In 2017, it cooperated with Qualcomm and established a joint venture to acquire sensor company InvenSense Inc and ASIC manufacturer ICsense. It also acquired TOF type MEMS sensor manufacturer Chirp Microsystem, Inc. ., Acquired plasma generator manufacturer Relyon Plasma and 3D embedded power solution developer Faraday Semi in 2018, and established TDK Venture, Inc. in 2019 to invest in venture companies.

TDK will continue to use the power of technology to support the "common things" in people's lives in the future.
