LORD MicroStrain

Company Homepage

Welcome to LORD-MicroStrain® Sensing Systems, We produce tiny sensors and systems for a variety of applications, including advanced manufacturing, off-highway vehicles, commercial and military manned and unmanned vehicles, civil structures and downhole tools. Our sensors have won numerous awards, and we pride ourselves on being innovative and responsive to our customers' unique requirements.

Headquartered in Cary, North Carolina, LORD is a privately held company founded in 1924. Our LORD-MicroStrain® Sensing Systems business is located in Weston, Vermont and began in 1987 (MicroStrain was founded in 1987 and acquired by LORD Corporation in 2012). Our early development focus was on producing microdisplacement sensors for strain measurement in biomechanical research applications. Our first sensor was designed for arthroscopic implantation into human knee ligaments; since then, we have expanded our product line by continually improving our products and expanding our market reach.

We introduce an expanded line of microdisplacement sensors built to withstand extreme temperatures, hundreds of millions of cycles, and complete submersion in salt water. The aerospace and automotive industries find our sensors meet their requirements and we are involved in many groundbreaking projects in these markets.

As our customer base grows, we continue to innovate, combining multiple sensors with advanced microcontrollers to improve system performance. We were one of the first sensor companies to add wireless capabilities, so tiny, low-power digital sensors can easily communicate with PCs and send data to the Internet.

Our line of inclinometers were originally developed to measure the angle of limbs to aid in the reactivation of limbs in paralyzed individuals. As a result of this effort, miniature, lightweight gyro-enhanced orientation modules are immediately accepted for navigation and control of unmanned systems in military, exploratory robotics applications and measurement feedback for downhole tools.

Sensors are truly changing our world; we are inspired to work with our customers to introduce advanced sensing technologies that enable the next generation of smarter and safer machines, civil structures and implantable devices.
